Badwater Basin in Death Valley is supposed to be the driest place in North America. That’s what you believe until you’re standing 5,000 feet above it at Dante’s View, watching the sunrise come up over something that has no business being there, a lake.

Welcome to Lake Manly. It shows up maybe once in a generation. Extreme rainfall fills the basin and for a brief season, the salt filled valley floor becomes a mirror. I stood there in awe this January morning. Viewing the reflection of the sky in a place that should be nothing but salt and silence.

I don’t have a lesson for you today. Just this: some things don’t ask to be understood. They ask to be taken in and the lesson will follow. If you ever get the chance to witness something that is as rare as life is, go. Just go.

I look up at the night sky and dream of what could be and remind myself the possibilities are endless, if I would just get out of my own way.

Many will never understand why I venture out alone for days at a time. Some call it selfish. They see a person with a family and responsibilities walking away into the trees.

What they don’t see is that every adventure restores a small, fractured piece of who I am. The pieces I have lost to the weight of the world over time. I don’t just photograph these moments, I experience them through the eyes of the Universe.

I may never be truly ‘whole’ again, but these moments in nature give me the strength to keep going for my family, my friends and myself. I don’t go to escape my life; I go so that I don’t lose the person living it.

Objectively, there is nothing ‘special’ about this image. It is Tunnel View in Yosemite - a landscape captured by millions of cameras for over a century. But to the teenager who grew up revering the work of Ansel Adams, standing here was a rite of passage I once wasn’t sure I’d live to see.

On this evening, there must have been a hundred tourists surrounding me, but the noise of the crowd couldn’t touch the silence in my head. As the sun began its descent and the colors in the sky turned, I wasn’t just looking at a landscape: I was looking at a milestone.

Every ‘worst day’ I have survived led to this moment in space and time. While the world sees another Yosemite postcard, I see proof of my own endurance. I let my soul cry happy tears: not because the journey is over, but because I’m still here another day to witness the light.

Hey there, It’s been a minute. Life’s been busy - work, family, travel, and somewhere in all of it, trying to find myself again.

This summer I made space for a Milky Way workshop in the South Dakota Badlands - a long overdue reconnection with the universe and with like minded humans.

Grateful to @erikkuna for putting on this workshop. And to Jay Grammond for making it all happen behind the scenes.

Welcome to Zabriskie Point in Death Valley. These colorful badlands were shaped by the erosion of ancient volcanic ash deposits, forming a stunning landscape that is one of the most visited places in Death Valley - especially at sunrise and sunset. It was truly a marvelous and soul fufulling place to visit!

Welcome to Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, sitting 282 feet below sea level. Tens of thousands of years ago, this basin was once covered by an ancient lake. Over time, as the climate changed, the lake dried up, leaving behind vast salt deposits. The patterns you see across the landscape are salt polygons, formed as groundwater rises and evaporates under the harsh desert sun.

Visiting the basin during the daytime is nearly impossible for most of the year due to the extreme heat. In fact, the hottest air temperature ever recorded on Earth — 134°F — happened right here in 1913.

Luckily for me, it was only April, and a balmy 87°F. Walking out to my location was an experience in itself. With every step across the sea of salt, there was a soft, satisfying crunch underfoot — a pattern that continued until I found the perfect spot. Once I stopped, the world fell completely silent. But it wasn’t just ordinary silence — it was as if time itself had come to a full and complete stop. I was utterly isolated — no people, no cell signal, no animals, not even the wind. Just pure, profound nothingness.

I set up my chair, tripod, and camera, and watched as the sun slowly kissed the mountain range in absolute silence. For someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, this was a soul-healing moment.

People often ask me how I can spend so many hours driving to the places I go. This is the answer right here. Chasing light and silence — it’s what centers my being.
